Trinidad and Tobago Holistic Aquatics Academy offer live-saving training programs from learn-to-swim through advanced lifesaving, lifeguarding and leadership.
First Aid and Lifeguard Training
At TTHAA, our advanced swim courses are in-depth and comprehensive. With expert training and instruction, every participant is well prepared for certification. Our team of instructors is handpicked based on skill, experience, and accreditation.
TTHAA offers a full range of recognized programs and accredited first aid training. Participants can choose from a wide range of training programs.
TTHAA can recommend a suitable training protocol depending on candidate goals and aspirations. First aid training is available to non-aquatic candidates.
Lifeguard Introductory Program
The program has three levels (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced). It focuses on swim stroke development, foundational skills, rescues and First Aid knowledge.
- Beginner (8-10 hr.): Swimmers continue stroke development with 50 m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Lifesaving Sport skills include a 25 m obstacle swim and 15 m object carry. First aid focuses on the assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS and treatment for bleeding. Fitness improves in 350 m workouts and 100 m timed swims.
- Intermediate (8-10 hr.): Swimmers develop better strokes over 75 m swims of each stroke. They tackle Lifesaving Sport skills in a lifesaving medley, timed object support and rescue with a buoyant aid. First aid focuses on assessing unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock and obstructed airway procedures. Skill drills develop a strong lifesaving foundation.
- Advanced (8-10 hr.): Swimmers are challenged with 600 m workouts, 300 m timed swims, and a 25 m object carry. Strokes are refined over 100 m swims. First aid focuses on treating bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies, including asthma and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defence methods, victim removals, rolling over, and supporting a victim face up in shallow water.
Prerequisite: None.
Evaluation & certification: Certificate awarded upon successful completion of the program and candidate evaluation.
Lifesaving I Program
Participants enhance their problem-solving skills and decision-making skills. Candidates learn CPR and start developing lifesaving skills (in preparation for lifeguard duties).
Lifesaving I is excellent preparation for success in the Lifesaving II program and provides a fun introduction to the lifesaving sport. (10 hr.): develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts.
Prerequisite: None (Lifeguard Introductory Program recommended).
Evaluation & certification: Certificate awarded upon successful completion of the program and candidate evaluation.
Lifesaving II Program
This program teaches lifesaving principles based on the four components of water rescue: Judgment – knowledge – skill – fitness. Participants will learn all relevant skills for challenging rescue incidents, including high-risk situations with conscious/unconscious victims. Emergency First Aid & CPR B is taught along with the Lifesaving II certificate that teaches participants all about: Stroke, Heart Attack, Angina, external bleeding and other health complications. These health conditions will then be applied to the pool setting, where Lifesaving II participants learn to recognize these victims in the pool and retrieve, remove, and ultimately treat/care for them.
Lifesaving II (15 hr.): challenges the participants mentally and physically in their Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness, which are the four components of water rescue. Participants acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Lifesaving II is a prerequisite for the Lifesaving III program.
Evaluation & certification: Certificate awarded upon successful completion of the program and candidate evaluation.
Lifesaving III Program
This program is designed for those who want to be challenged with more advanced training. The course includes an introduction to supervision in an aquatic facility. Lifesaving III is an essential prerequisite for advanced programs (National Lifeguard and Instructor Certification).
Lifesaving III (20 hr.): begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares participants for lifeguard responsibilities. Participants strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. This program emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. This program is a prerequisite for advanced training in the advanced lifeguard and leadership certification programs.
Prerequisite: Lifesaving II and or Standard First Aid certifications from a recognized institution.
Evaluation & certification: Certificate awarded upon successful completion of the program and candidate evaluation.
Advanced Lifeguard and Leadership Program
Lifeguarding is an exciting and rewarding job that carries great responsibility. Guards take courses and train hard for events they hope will never happen and work hard to prevent.
In this program, participants learn how to communicate with their fellow team members, rescue patrons from an aquatic environment (pool and waterfront), learn how to handle victims who are submerged under the water and those who may have a suspected head and/or spinal injuries. With the National Lifeguard certificate, candidates are now lifeguards! Standard First Aid/CPR certification is a prerequisite to this program.
